After spending 20 years as an actor, he transitioned behind the camera to become an Academy Award-winning director and co-founder of the Sundance Film Festival, which has become an international benchmark for independent cinema.

Redford, whose real name was Charles Robert Redford Jr., was a committed environmental activist who also fought to preserve the natural landscape and resources of his home state of Utah.

The actor, born on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, to an accountant father, was known for his support for the Democratic Party and his advocacy for Native American tribes.

In his early career, the young, tousled star achieved great success alongside Paul Newman as a charismatic outlaw in the 1969 American Western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Major Hollywood studios offered him approximately 70 roles, most of which were positive, committed characters (such as Three Days of the Condor) or romantic ones (such as The Great Gatsby).

Among the highlights of his career were his roles in seven films directed by Sydney Pollack.

Although he won an Academy Award in 2002 for his lifetime achievement, he has never received any of these awards for a specific film as an actor, despite his many acclaimed roles in such famous works as "Jeremiah Johnson" (Palm d'Or in 1972), "All the Presidents Men" (four Academy Awards in 1977), and "Out of Africa" (seven Academy Awards in 1986).
