A New York court on Monday indicted American singer R Kelly, finding the former R&B star guilty of running a "system" of sexual exploitation of young people, including minors, for years.

The six-week trial in Brooklyn saw nine women and two men confirm in court that R. Kelly had sexually exploited them, and spoke of rape, forced drug use, detention and child pornography.

A jury in Brooklyn federal court also found the 54-year-old singer, known worldwide for his hit "I Believe I Can Fly," guilty of a range of sexual offences, including "sex trafficking."

Robert Sylvester Kelly has been on trial since August 18 in cases of extortion, sexual exploitation of minors, kidnapping, corruption and forced labor related to incidents that occurred between 1994 and 2018.

During the recitation of the ruling, there was no expression of emotion on the former star, who was wearing a jacket and tie, and Kelly, who was wearing a muzzle, only bowed his head and closed his eyes.

Throughout the trial, the former R&B singer kept silent. In a statement to the media, one of his attorneys, Devero Kanek, expressed his "disappointment with the verdict" reached by a jury of seven men and five women, revealing that the defense team intends to appeal the verdict.

As is often the case in criminal cases in the United States, the prison sentence is later pronounced, and in this case it is expected that R. Kelly will be sentenced on May 4, 2022, who is already in remand, while facing life imprisonment.
