Meryl Streep wins the Princess of Asturias award !

On Wednesday, American actress Meryl Streep won the Spanish Princess of Asturias Award, one of the most prominent awards in Spanish-speaking countries, for her “unforgettable performance” of “complex female characters” throughout her artistic career that began more than fifty years ago.

The jury said in a statement that it had awarded the award to the 73-year-old actress in the arts category.

And she considered that "the honesty and responsibility in choosing Streep for her roles in serving inspiring and exemplary stories goes beyond the framework of the screen."

In a statement, the actress expressed her pride in receiving "this prestigious award from one of the most talented countries and cultures in the world."

Three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep has starred in more than 60 films, ranging from a Nazi concentration camp survivor to a housewife performing songs by the famous Swedish band ABBA, earning her the status of a cinematic icon.

She won her last Oscar in 2012 for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady". She won two Oscars, the first in 1980 for “Kramer vs. Kramer” and the second in 1983 for “Sophie's Choice”.

The winner of the Princess of Asturias Prize receives 50,000 euros, one of eight prizes in the arts, sciences and other fields awarded each year by the foundation named in honor of Princess Leonor, heir to the Spanish throne.

Previous winners in the Arts category have included American directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, Austrian Michael Haneke and American architect Frank Gehry.

The winners in the various categories will receive their awards from King Philip VI of Spain during a ceremony that will be held next October, and Spanish television will transmit it directly.
